Financial Resources Federal Credit Union’s Food Drive Benefits Four Food Pantries

Photo shows a team of Credit Union employees getting ready to sort grocery items and essentials to be distributed to four area food banks.
Bridgewater, NJ – In 2010, nearly 49 million Americans, or 32.6 million adults and 16.2 million children were not sure where their next meal was coming

from. Right now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days. They are unable to consistently get nutritious and adequate amounts of food to maintain a healthy life. (USDA. Coleman-Jensen, A., Nord, M., Andrews, M., & Carlson, S. Household Food Security in the United States in 2010.)

To help people in several local communities, employees of Financial Resources Federal Credit Union (FCU), with headquarters in Bridgewater, N.J., held its third annual food drive during December to support four local food banks: the Franklin Township Food Bank, the Food Bank Network of Somerset County, the Flemington Area Food Pantry, and the Hillsborough Food Pantry.

Financial Resources FCU employees separated and packaged the food, and at the end of the drive, each branch delivered the food to their local food bank.

Lena Matthews, CEO of Financial Resources FCU, says, “Financial Resources is committed to supporting our local food banks particularly in the current economy when many people are struggling financially, and the need for help is greater than ever. A top priority for us is giving back to our communities.”

Financial Resources Federal Credit Union Donates Holiday Toys for Children

Employees and members of Financial Resources Federal Credit Union, with headquarters in Bridgewater, N.J., participated in Gifts of the Season, the 2011 United Way Toy Drive by filling decorated toy collection boxes at Financial Resources FCU’s five branches in Bridgewater, Green Brook, Hillsborough, Flemington and Somerset with hundreds of unwrapped toys for children in need and to help families struggling to make ends meet.

Receiving the gifts for their children meant that parents could use their limited financial resources for their family’s basic needs, such as food, utilities, rent, etc. without going into debt to pay for gifts for their children.

Lena Matthews, CEO of Financial Resources FCU, says, “The Gifts of the Season toy drive is a great way to encourage community involvement for such a great cause. We feel this is the least we can do to help make the holiday season a happy time for children and their families in the community.”

Each year, thousands of low-income families and individuals receive holiday gifts thanks to the generosity and contributions of local organizations, such as Financial Resources FCU. This was the second consecutive year Financial Resources FCU participated in the United Way Toy Drive. Last year, alone, more than 13,000 gifts were distributed.

Gifts of the Season is a partnership effort of Somerset County United Way, the Somerset County Food Bank Network, the Somerset County Board of Social Services and many other local agencies that serve low-income families.

Financial Resources Federal Credit Union Sponsors Children for the Holiday

Bridgewater, NJ – The employees, board of directors, and supervisory committee of Financial Resources Federal Credit Union, with headquarters in Bridgewater, N.J., made sure that 30 local children, who have been separated from their families, had a gift to open this holiday. The children were identified by age and gender though CASA SHaW (Court Appointed Special Advocates of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties), an agency that provides trained community volunteers to act as advocates in court for children who have been abused or neglected and are in the foster care system.

Receiving a gift during the holidays is a bright spot for these children who have been separated from their families and rely on the charity of others for any gifts that they get. Financial Resources employees and members of the Credit Union’s Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee sponsored one or more children, and shopped and wrapped gifts for them based on a wish list. CASA SHaW has been a charity supported by the Financial Resources Foundation and this is the fourth consecutive holiday season that the credit union supported CASA SHaW’s holiday gift program.

Lena Matthews, CEO of Financial Resources Federal Credit Union, says, “"Being in foster care is hard enough. We wanted to make the holidays as happy as possible for these children. We hope that our small contributions during the holidays made a difficult situation as good as possible for the children that had to go through it.”

SBA’s “Breakthrough Lender of the Year”

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – Among a sea of big banks, Financial Resources FCU stood out at the Lender Awards Ceremony of the New Jersey District Office of the Small Business Administration as it was honored as the “Breakthrough Lender of the Year.” Lena Matthews, Financial Resources FCU CEO, and fellow executives accepted this prestigious award at the Newark Club in Newark, N.J. on the morning of November 8, 2011.

Recognized for netting 13 SBA loans totaling approximately $1.5 million, these loans also made Financial Resources the most active new SBA lender in the state for 2011. Financial Resources offers the SBA 7A and the much touted Patriot Express Loan that is designed to help veterans and members of the military expand or start a small business.

“We are very excited about this. We were able to meet member needs with these SBA loans. It’s good for the economy and for us it is the start of what we expect to be long-term success in business lending,” said CEO Lena Matthews. “Our SBA success this year has been a true team effort,” added Mark Sovelove, senior vice president of lending at Financial Resources, who brings a strong business lending background from his days in community banking. He also pointed out that Financial Resources has been active in business lending beyond SBA loans, including a $2 million plus solar loan earlier this year.

NJCUL President/CEO Paul Gentile was in attendance. “This is a milestone for this credit union. They are committed to helping their members and the economy with strong business lending. It was nice to see a credit union honored amidst all the large banks in the room,” said Gentile.

“Knowing that our loans have had a positive impact on our local economy is award enough,” summed up Ms. Matthews, “but being recognized by the SBA is further proof that our dedication to our local communities is respected and appreciated.”

According to the SBA, Financial Resources is the first lender to receive the Breakout Lender award in New Jersey.

business with an SBA Patriot Express loan

Bridgewater, NJ – One of the best ways to honor our veterans and their families is to help them get re-established in their civilian lives. Financial Resources Federal Credit Union helped put those words into action by closing on its first Patriot Express loan, as part of the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative program.

Earlier this year, Financial Resources FCU became the first credit union in the area to be part of the Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative program created by the SBA to help veterans and members of the military community establish or expand small businesses. Dr. Michael Eosso, a veteran of the United States Navy, will be using this loan to help start-up his chiropractic office in Branchburg, New Jersey.

Marc S. Sovelove, Senior Vice President of Lending, and his Member Business Lending team worked closely with Dr. Michael Eosso to make the loan process more accessible and easy to use. According to Dr. Eosso, “This loan has allowed me to get office space and purchase necessary equipment…for that, I am very grateful.” Mr. Sovelove added, “We are proud to do our part to help our veterans and their families… we look forward to making many more loans of this kind.”

Patriot Express loans are available to veterans, members of the military community and their families. They can be used for start-up costs, equipment purchases, business-occupied real estate purchases, working capital, expansion and more. Typically, Patriot Express loans feature the SBA’s lowest interest rates for business loans, generally 2.25 percent to 4.75 percent over prime depending upon the size and maturity of the loan. For more information on eligibility and business financing, contact Marc S. Sovelove at 908.253.6424.

Financial Resources FCU designated as Preferred Lender by U.S. Small Business Administration

Bridgewater, NJ - The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has designated Financial Resources Federal Credit Union as a Preferred Lender. Preferred Lender status enables Financial Resources to provide quicker processing and loan approval to small business owners, which in turn allows these businesses to grow and expand. This makes Financial Resources an important partner in helping to create jobs and further economic development in the local economy.

Financial Resources Federal Credit Union is one of five credit unions in New Jersey participating in the SBA lending program, and the only one to have achieved the Preferred Lender status. Nationwide, less than 20% of all approved SBA lenders achieve this designation.

The Preferred Lenders Program (PLP)
The Preferred Lenders Program (PLP) is part of SBA's effort to streamline the procedures necessary to provide financial assistance to the small business community. Under this program, SBA delegates the final credit decision and most servicing and liquidation authority and responsibility to carefully selected PLP lenders. SBA, however, will continue to check loan eligibility criteria.

Lenders are considered for PLP status based on their record with SBA, and must have demonstrated a proficiency in processing and servicing SBA-guaranteed loans. In the event of payment default by the borrower and the need for enforced collections, the PLP lender agrees to liquidate all business assets before asking SBA to honor its guaranty.

For more information on SBA loan programs, please call a Financial Resources business lending specialist at 908.253.6424.

Financial Resources Federal Credit Union helps finance solar energy project

In these times of rising energy costs and concern about the environment, Financial Resources Federal Credit Union is proud to announce the closing of a $2,600,000 loan to help finance a photovoltaic solar panel system on the roof of the Fram Trak manufacturing plant in Middlesex, New Jersey. “As a company that is committed to promoting green energy, we are honored to be part of this very important project,” explains Philippe Ferreira, AVP, Member Business Lending, Financial Resources Federal Credit Union.

From left: Philippe Ferreira, of Financial Resources FCU, contractor Sean Peris of KRN Solar, LLC, and Albert Santelli, Jr., of Fram Trak Industries on the solar rooftop.

Albert Santelli, Sr. of Santelli Family Limited Partnership is very excited about the energy saving prospects of using solar energy. “If it weren’t for Financial Resources, we wouldn’t have been able to do it,” noted Santelli. The contractor for the project is KRN Solar, LLC., a company with extensive experience in creating renewable solar energy solutions for both residential and commercial customers. United Way Toy Drive Update

This year, the Credit Union participated in the Somerset and Hunterdon County, United Way Toy Drive. Toy collection boxes were available at each of our Public Access Branches. The Toy Drive lasted until Thursday, December, 9. Collection boxes at our Bridgewater, Green Brook, Hillsborough and Somerset branches benefited the Somerset United Way program called "Gifts of the Season," and our Flemington branch benefited the Hunterdon United Way program called "Holiday Hands."

Gifts given through the program may be the only ones received by those less fortunate in our community. For parents, receiving the gifts for their children enable them to utilize their limited financial resources to pay for basic needs such as food, utilities, rent, etc. and not go into debt to pay for gifts for their children. The Toy Drive asked donor participants not wrap the gifts to give parents a sense of involvement adding to their holiday spirit as well.

Financial Resources FCU thanks our many generous employees and members for helping to make this program successful and bring joy to so many local families!

Financial Resources raises $15,000 for Somerset Medical Center Foundation and $2,200 for Shannon Daley Memorial Fund

Bridgewater, NJ – Financial Resources FCU Foundation announced that its annual charity event held this year on Monday, May 10, 2010 at The Palace at Somerset Park raised over $17,000 to benefit Somerset Medical Center Foundation and The Shannon Daley Memorial Fund.

Somerset Medical Center (http://www.somersetmedicalcenter.com) is a nationally accredited, 355-bed regional medical center that provides comprehensive emergency, medical/surgical and rehabilitative services to Central New Jersey residents. As the only hospital in Somerset County, Somerset Medical Center touches people of all ages and backgrounds and each year delivers 1,500 newborns to families in our community.

At the request of the Somerset Medical Center Nursing staff, the $15,000 donation to the Medical Center will be used to purchase a new incubator (also called an isolette) for SMC’s Special Care Nursery. A baby, especially a premature baby, who cannot maintain body heat, can be protected from drafts and cold while the incubator offers continuous monitoring of both central and peripheral body temperature for the baby. By monitoring both temperatures, caregivers are better able to anticipate the changing needs of the baby.

The evening’s silent auction proceeds of $2,200 went to Shannon Daley Memorial Fund (http://www.shannonfund.org/). The Fund helps local area residents (within a 30-mile radius of Readington Township, NJ) who are facing financial difficulties due to a child facing serious illness.

Sponsoring the event were Diebold, Inc., of North Canton, OH, and James Toyota Kia, of Flemington, NJ.

Financial Resources FCU Foundation, who organizes charitable events for Financial Resources Federal Credit Union, hosted the charity event. Lena Matthews, President & CEO of the Credit Union and Chairman of the Foundation said, "We were extremely pleased with the support for and turnout at this year's event. We could not have done it without the help from our sponsors and guests."

Matthews added, "I also want to extend special gratitude to Diebold and James Toyota Kia of Flemington for once again graciously and generously supporting our event this year. Everyone's generous response will help Somerset Medical Center forward their mission of providing comprehensive health care of the highest quality to our community and The Shannon Daley Fund’s efforts to support area families in need.

Over the last 18 years, the Credit Union and Foundation have raised over $400,000 to benefit charities and medical institutions that provide services to needy children.

The Financial Resources FCU Foundation, Inc., is a tax-exempt charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation hosts charitable events for Financial Resources FCU. Donations are tax-deductible.

Financial Resources Federal Credit Union's "Jeans Day Friday" program provides $6,564 in charitable contributions

Bridgewater, NJ – Borrowing an approach to "Casual Fridays," Financial Resources Federal Credit Union established "Jeans Day Friday" in 2005 whereby twice each month, Credit Union employees are permitted to wear jeans by contributing at least $5.00 to a fund maintained by the Credit Union’s Foundation, Financial Resources FCU Foundation, Inc., for the benefit of local charitable organizations.  A committee representing the Credit Union’s employees names the recipients of those proceeds.  With more than 50 employees at the Bridgewater location, this opportunity for a relaxed day at work builds a significant pool of funds over the course of a year to support the charities.  Since 2005, the program has raised over $20,000.

On March 24, 2010, the Board of Trustees of Financial Resources FCU Foundation, Inc. affirmed the organizations named as the recipients of the Credit Union’s "Jeans Day Friday" program and the amount dedicated to each organization by credit union employees from the funds raised in 2009.  The amounts contributed to each organization, including a special drive to raise funds for the Haiti Relief Fund, also include a 100% match made by the Credit Union and totaled $6,564.

Lena Matthews, President & CEO of the Credit Union and Chairman of the Foundation expressed gratitude for the support shown by the Credit Union’s employees, "On behalf of the employees of Financial Resources FCU, we are delighted to support these organizations."

Financial Resources distributed the funds evenly to four local charities and through a special allocation to the Haiti Relief Fund as a result of their Jeans Day program.

St. Peter’s University Hospital Child Life Program  $    1,280.50
Resource Center of Somerset (formerly known as The Resource Center for Women and Families)  $    1,280.50
The Midland School  $    1,280.50
Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (S.H.I.P.)  $    1,280.50
Haiti Relief Fund  $    1,442.00
Total amount for named organizations from Jeans Day:  $    6,564.00

Financial Resources Serves Up Support for Local Food Banks and CASA SHaW

Bridgewater, NJ –  Once again, Financial Resources FCU, has stepped up to help those in need this holiday season.

In their continued efforts to support and give back to the communities that they serve, Financial Resources FCU, headquartered in Bridgewater, NJ, donated $2,200 worth of food and essentials to four area food banks and also assisted Court Appointed Special Advocates of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties, (CASA SHaW) (http://www.casashaw.org) a very special organization which helps locally abused and neglected children.

The food bank effort all started when Credit Union employees offered to volunteer their time at the Somerset County Food Bank. It was then that they learned that the requests for food were twice as many as they were last year. In response to this urgent need,  a team of Financial Resources employees ordered, sorted and personally delivered grocery items and essentials to each of four area food banks including The Franklin Township Food Bank, www.franklinfoodbank.org/, The Food Bank Network of Somerset County, www.somersetfoodbank.org/, The Flemington Area Food Pantry, http://flemafp.com/, and the Hillsborough Food Pantry (phone: 908-369-3880).

"One of our strategic priorities is to be an active and supportive partner in the communities we serve," said Lena Matthews, President and CEO of Financial Resources FCU, "But we’re also committed to improving the quality of life in our branch communities, which is why we’ve partnered again with CASA SHaW to help support the wonderful work that they do."

For the second consecutive holiday season, Financial Resources supported CASA SHaW by sponsoring 40 children during the holidays. Each of the children submitted a holiday wish list to Financial Resources employees and members of the credit union’s Board of Directors, who then enjoyed shopping and wrapping the gifts for the children. Some sponsored as many as three children.  In addition to the child sponsorships each of the last two years, CASA SHaW was also the beneficiary at Financial Resources Foundation’s main charity event in the spring of 2007.

This generous response by Financial Resources FCU underscores their continuing support of the food banks in Somerset and Hunterdon Counties (NJ), CASA SHaW, and the communities that they serve.  Please join Financial Resources FCU in supporting these critically important local organizations and making the New Year brighter for those in need.

The Food Bank Network of Somerset County (NJ) mission is to distribute food and other basic human needs to those less fortunate in the community in a manner, which recognizes and advances self worth and human dignity.

The Franklin Township Food Bank's mission is to reach out to the community and provide food and assistance to people in need in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.

The Flemington Area Food Pantry’s mission is to provide food to eligible citizens of Hunterdon County. The Food Pantry is a volunteer organization distributing food received from the citizens and businesses of Hunterdon County to persons certified by governmental social programs as well as those referred by leaders of county religious congregations. It is supplemental to other program resources.

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties, working as part of a network of local, statewide CASA programs, ensure that children, who are victims of physical, sexual, and/or psychological abuse or outright abandonment, have a voice in court proceedings that determine their fates.
